Q. Pellet rifles need accuracy and power for hunting. What choices do you have?
A. We help you to hunt responsibly with our selection of the best air rifles available. Look at the list below for our suggestions. Refine your search and choose using the unique Archer Pellet Guns RateAGun™ score. The lower the score, the easier the gun is to use.
Hunters need high muzzle velocity. PCP rifles provide this with low RateAGun™ scores, while spring-powered guns give this at a lower cost but with a heavy recoil resulting in a high RateAGun™ score.
Many people who buy pellet guns want to shoot birds and small critters, too. That's why we show a "Hunting Category" indication for all the pellet guns on our site.
In this section we have pellet guns specially selected for their use in hunting. These models have the power and accuracy needed for responsible hunting of pests, small game and even larger animals, but this often makes them big, heavy and tough to shoot. High RateAGun™ scores are the result. But serious pellet rifle hunters understand this and value the humane "one shot kill" they provide.
If you plan to hunt, please don't over-estimate your capabilities or those of your pellet gun. Practice until you can shoot really accurately, learn to estimate distances, and get as close as you can to your target. Always use a scope.
The chart below gives examples of the types of prey that can be taken at short ranges with different pellet guns. Green means "OK to use", red means "Don't use this combination."
